A Sussex Workshop, Born of an Unlikely Journey

In 2001, our founder Adam Thain found himself stranded on the remote island of Karimunjawa, Indonesia, after a tropical storm then rescued and cared for by a local islander until he could return to the mainland. That chance encounter, and the craftsmanship traditions Adam encountered there, planted the seed for what would become Wealden Benches. A commitment to building garden furniture the proper way using genuine heartwood teak and time honoured joinery rather than the mass produced alternatives flooding the market.

Twenty five years on, we remain a family run workshop based in the Sussex Weald, hand crafting garden benches for gardens, heritage properties and private homes across the UK.

Craft, Not Flat Pack

Every Wealden bench is hand built using traditional mortise and tenon joinery, the same joinery methods used by furniture makers for centuries, chosen because it simply outlasts screws, bolts and modern shortcuts. Combined with true A grade heartwood teak, this construction gives every bench a genuine 25 year + structural lifespan, backed by our 10 year guarantee.

We exclusively source teak in full compliance with UK Timber Regulations (UKTR) and UK FLEGT frameworks, meaning every piece of timber we use is verified traceable and harvested from responsibly managed plantations, never at the expense of the forests it came from.

Just taken delivery of Great Maytham bench, ordered Monday arrived Friday exactly as scheduled across 350+ miles. Precisely the sturdy piece of garden furniture we wanted and so care was needed in its carrying and positioning. It looks great. Accompanying instructions of how to care for it were welcome. Now all we need is some of its Sussex sun transferred north so we can make the most of it.

Just Awesome! Easy to use website with a good range of customisation options. Even when I had an issue with what I was trying to order it was soon resolved. On the day of delivery the bench arrived well packaged on a pallet, and when unwrapped it really was a good looking quality Bench with bang on engraved details. We got this for my parents 60th Wedding Anniversary and it now has pride of place in their garden, and all of the family have had pictures taken on it as a momento of celebrating a grand anniversary with Mum & Dad. I ordered a Teak Garden Bench 3 Seat Great Maytham as a birthday present for my wife. The ordering process was very smooth and I was able to complete it without difficulty.

As the delivery date was some way off from the order date, I contacted the office and a very helpful lady was able to confirm that the bench was proceeding as expected with it leaving Wealden on the Tuesday and arriving with me on the Thursday, which was the date I had requested.

On the Thursday morning a large truck appeared and the driver unloaded the bench / cushion / cover and cleaner on a pallet and moved it to the side of the property. It was very securely packaged and with the engraving which I had requested it looks fantastic.

My wife was delighted with her gift, which is what it is all about.

The production team takes real pride in ensuring every bench leaves our warehouse in perfect condition, no small feat, with hundreds dispatched each week. Jamie and Harvey personally guide every bench through our quality control process, checking each one against your exact specification before it leaves us.

Every bench is traditionally constructed using mortise and tenon joinery with durable teak dowels for lasting structural integrity, then fine sanded and finished by hand. Every plaque and engraving is carefully checked against your written requirements before dispatch. Our philosophy is simple; every bench leaves us as if it were destined for our own family.
