About Wealden Benches

A Sussex Workshop, Born of an Unlikely Journey

In 2001, our founder Adam Thain found himself stranded on the remote island of Karimunjawa, Indonesia, after a tropical storm then rescued and cared for by a local islander until he could return to the mainland. That chance encounter, and the craftsmanship traditions Adam encountered there, planted the seed for what would become Wealden Benches. A commitment to building garden furniture the proper way using genuine heartwood teak and time honoured joinery rather than the mass produced alternatives flooding the market.

Twenty five years on, we remain a family run workshop based in the Sussex Weald, hand crafting garden benches for gardens, heritage properties and private homes across the UK.

Trusted With Britain's Finest Gardens

Over the past quarter century, Wealden Benches has become a trusted supplier to some of the most discerning names in British heritage and horticulture including the National Trust and English Heritage alongside universities, NHS Trusts, parish councils, schools, golf clubs and landscape architects who demand furniture built to withstand decades of use.

It's a standard we hold ourselves to on every bench we make whether it's destined for a National Trust garden or your own back lawn.

Craft, Not Flat Pack

Every Wealden bench is hand built using traditional mortise and tenon joinery, the same joinery methods used by furniture makers for centuries, chosen because it simply outlasts screws, bolts and modern shortcuts. Combined with true A grade heartwood teak, this construction gives every bench a genuine 25 year + structural lifespan, backed by our 10 year guarantee.

We exclusively source teak in full compliance with UK Timber Regulations (UKTR) and UK FLEGT frameworks, meaning every piece of timber we use is verified traceable and harvested from responsibly managed plantations, never at the expense of the forests it came from.

Your bench arrives fully assembled and hand finished, ready to take its place in your garden the day it's delivered.

Built for Life's Milestones

A well made bench tends to outlive the moment it was bought for which is why so many of ours mark one. Anniversaries, retirements, milestone birthdays, a much loved family garden, our personalisation and engraving service lets you turn a Wealden bench into something that carries meaning for the family who sits on it, for generations.

Still Family Run, Still in Sussex

No shortcuts, no mass production, just benches and furniture built to be handed down.

Every Wealden bench passes through the hands of the same small, dedicated team, from your first phone call, through design and personalisation, to the final quality check before it leaves our workshop. Here's who's behind it.

The Office - The Welcoming Heart of Wealden Benches

"We're committed to ensuring every customer receives a seamless, well informed service as they select and order their perfect garden bench. The best part of my role is hearing how much our customers enjoy their new outdoor space, a powerful reminder of the lasting quality we provide."

Thomas

Our office is the warm, welcoming heart of Wealden Benches, led by Thomas, with invaluable support from Sheila and Wendy. We believe in good old-fashioned conversation, alongside email and live chat, our phones are always ringing and we're happy to spend the time talking you through material choices, sizing and any personalisation needs.

Between them, the team coordinates hundreds of deliveries nationwide each week, and they're your first point of contact for any logistical questions along the way. For existing customers, they're also on hand with expert, reassuring advice on caring for and maintaining your teak bench. They're delighted to welcome visitors to our showroom too, offering personal appointments so you can experience the quality and comfort of our benches first hand.

The Design Studio - Bringing Your Vision to Life

"As Design Manager at Wealden Benches, my role centres on perfecting the personalisation and design details for every bench we engrave. Every customisation, whether a simple inscription or a complex motif, begins with a conversation about our customer's vision. I approach each design with meticulous care, whether it's a name and date or a custom crest reflecting a family's story. Knowing my work becomes a lasting, personal feature in someone's garden is both humbling and motivating."

James

In our design studio, James is the creative force behind every engraving, turning your ideas into a lasting design. Using software developed specifically for precision engraving, alongside years of expertise, James ensures every inscription is clear, bold and true to the story you want to tell.

Handling hundreds of personalisations each week, from text to intricate images and motifs capturing hobbies, passions, and memories, James brings a rare ability to understand exactly what each client is looking for, consistently delivering designs that exceed expectations.

Production - Crafting Perfection

"Our warehouse team takes immense pride in ensuring every order is prepared to the highest standard. We know each bench will be a treasured feature in someone's home for generations, and that drives everything we do. Engaging directly with customers and hearing how much care they see in the finished piece is one of the most rewarding parts of the job."

Jamie & Harvey

The production team takes real pride in ensuring every bench leaves our warehouse in perfect condition, no small feat, with hundreds dispatched each week. Jamie and Harvey personally guide every bench through our quality control process, checking each one against your exact specification before it leaves us.

Every bench is traditionally constructed using mortise and tenon joinery with durable teak dowels for lasting structural integrity, then fine sanded and finished by hand. Every plaque and engraving is carefully checked against your written requirements before dispatch. Our philosophy is simple; every bench leaves us as if it were destined for our own family.
