Wealden Benches in History ~ The Commissioned Garden Bench Seat for the Rudyard Kipling Statue

For lovers of literature and quality craftsmanship, there is a powerful story behind one of East Sussex’s most popular landmarks. The life size bronze statue of renowned author Rudyard Kipling in Burwash sits on a garden bench, a poignant and interactive tribute to the Nobel Prize winner. What many visitors do not realise is that the original bench used for the bronze casting was supplied by Wealden Benches.

In 2019, we were commissioned to provide the exact bench model upon which the life size figure of Kipling was mounted. The quality and traditional design of our furniture was chosen to become a permanent part of this significant piece of public art, ensuring a piece of Wealden Benches history is forever preserved in bronze.

The Wealden Bench That Inspired the Statue

The sculptor, the talented local artist Victoria Atkinson required a robust, traditionally crafted garden bench that perfectly captured the style and permanence of a writer's seat of reflection. Our Great Maytham teak bench was selected to serve as the foundation for the final work, becoming the precise model for the bronze casting.

This commission underscores the quality and enduring design of our products. When you visit Burwash and sit beside the great author, you are sitting on the physical design of a Wealden Bench, crafted with the same superior workmanship found in every bench we sell today.
