Every year, the nation unites on Remembrance Day, often also known as Armistice Day, to honour those who served during times of conflict. It is a moment that brings together homes, businesses, schools and communities, each taking time to pause and reflect. At Wealden Benches, we recognise the importance of this national act of remembrance and the role that peaceful outdoor spaces can play in supporting reflection.
The Significance of the Two-Minute Silence
This year marks 105 years since the signing of the Armistice that ended the First World War. Across Britain, people stand still for two minutes at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month. This shared moment of silence is a powerful gesture of respect for those who served and sacrificed their lives in conflicts past and present.
The tradition of observing silence dates back to May 1918 in Cape Town, where the Mayor, Sir Harry Hands, introduced a daily three-minute pause after learning of his son’s death during the war. The city would fall quiet as the Last Post signalled the beginning of the silence and Reveille marked its end. Public transport stopped, pedestrians stood still and heads were bowed.
Inspired by this, Sir Percy Fitzpatrick proposed that the silence become part of national remembrance. The first official two-minute silence took place on 11 November 1919, the first anniversary of the Armistice.
When Is the Two-Minute Silence Observed?
The two-minute silence is held every Remembrance Day at 11am. Across the UK, people pause in workplaces, schools, towns and homes to honour the exact moment the Armistice began. Services also take place throughout the country, bringing communities together in reflection.
